خبت النار تخبو: سكن لهبها، وصار عليها خباء من رماد، أي غشاء، وأصل الخباء الغطاء الذي يتغطى به، وقيل لغشاء السنبلة خباء، قال عز وجل: كلما خبت زدناهم سعيرا [الإسراء/ 97].

خبت النار تخبو: ateşin alevi dindi, yatıştı ve üzerinde külden bir hıbâ', yani bir zar/örtü oluştu. Hıbâ''nın aslı, örtünülen örtüdür. Başağın zarına da hıbâ' denilmiştir. Allah azze ve celle şöyle buyurdu: "Ne zaman sönmeye yüz tutsa, onlara alevi artırırız" [17:97].
