القرع: ضرب شيء على شيء، ومنه: قرعته بالمقرعة. قال تعالى: كذبت ثمود وعاد بالقارعة [الحاقة/ 4]، القارعة ما القارعة [القارعة/ 1- 2].

el-Kar': bir şeyi bir şeye vurmaktır. "Onu kamçıyla (mikra'a) vurdum" ifadesi de bundandır. Allah şöyle buyurdu: "Semûd ve Âd, o Kâri'a'yı (çarpıp helak eden felaketi) yalanladılar" [69:4]. "el-Kâri'a! Nedir o Kâri'a?" [101:1, 101:2].
