الصنو: الغصن الخارج عن أصل الشجرة، يقال: هما صنوا نخلة، وفلان صنو أبيه، والتثنية: صنوان، وجمعه صنوان . قال تعالى: صنوان وغير صنوان [الرعد/ 4].

es-Sınv: ağacın kökünden çıkan daldır. "İkisi bir hurma ağacının iki sınvıdır (aynı kökten çıkan iki dalıdır)" denir. "Falanca, babasının sınvıdır" (yani ondan türeyen bir dal gibidir) da denir. Bunun ikili (tesniye) biçimi sınvân, çoğulu da sınvân'dır. Yüce Allah şöyle buyurdu: "Aynı kökten (çatallı) olan ve olmayan (sınvân ve gayr-i sınvân)" [13:4].
