الوثن: واحد الأوثان، وهو حجارة كانت تعبد. قال تعالى: إنما اتخذتم من دون الله أوثانا [العنكبوت/ 25] وقيل: أوثنت فلانا: أجزلت عطيته، وأوثنت من كذا: أكثرت منه.

el-Vesen (put): "el-evsân"ın tekilidir; kendisine tapılan taşlardır. Yüce Allah şöyle buyurdu: "Siz Allah'ı bırakıp ancak birtakım putlar edindiniz" [29:25]. Denildi ki: "evsentü fülânen": ona bol/cömert bağışta bulundum; "evsentü min kezâ": ondan çokça yaptım (onu çoğalttım).
