Hajj is the worship of visiting the Kaʿba; the Qur'an gives its core elements and spirit.
Elements in the Qur'an
- First House, and obligation: the Kaʿba is "the first House set up for mankind" and a place of security (3:96); "Pilgrimage to the House is a duty owed to God by those who are able to make their way." (3:97)
- The proclamation: "Proclaim the Hajj among the people; they will come to you on foot and on every lean mount from every distant path." (22:27)
- The time: "Hajj is in known months; in Hajj there is no quarrelling, transgression or intimacy." (2:197)
- The rites: the saʿy between Ṣafā and Marwa (2:158); circling (ṭawāf) the Kaʿba (22:29); returning from ʿArafāt and remembering God at al-Mashʿar al-Ḥarām (2:198).
- The hady, and being prevented: complete Hajj and ʿUmra; if prevented, an affordable offering (hady); whoever cannot, fasts (2:196).
- Provision: "The best provision is taqwā." (2:197)
An honest limit
The Qur'an gives the place, time, main rites and spirit of Hajj; the counts of ṭawāf/saʿy, the exact order and detailed practice are shaped by the Sunnah and fiqh — a domain of opinion.
