What is patience (ṣabr) in the Qur'an?

Ṣabr is not mere endurance; in the Qur'an it is steadfastness — not falling apart, holding firm on the truth.

Seek help through patience

  • "O believers, seek help through patience and prayer; God is with the patient." (2:153)

Trial and good tidings

  • "We will test you with fear, hunger, loss of wealth, lives and fruits. Give good tidings to the patient!" (2:155)
  • In affliction they say: "To God we belong and to Him we return." (2:156)
  • "Upon them are blessings and mercy from their Lord." (2:157)

Patience and reward

  • Among the conditions of success: those who "counsel one another to patience." (103:3)
  • "The patient are given their reward without measure." (39:10)
