الجوع: الألم الذي ينال الحيوان من خلو المعدة من الطعام، والمجاعة: عبارة عن زمان الجدب، ويقال: رجل جائع وجوعان: إذا كثر جوعه.

el-Cû' (açlık): Midenin yiyecekten boş kalması sebebiyle canlıya isabet eden acıdır. el-Mecâa (kıtlık): Kuraklık ve darlık zamanını ifade eden bir tabirdir. "Racülün câi'un" (aç adam) ve "cev'ân" (çok aç) denir: açlığı çoğaldığında bu ifadeler kullanılır.
