واسأل -أيها الرسول- هؤلاء اليهود عن خبر أهل القرية التي كانت بقرب البحر، إذ يعتدي أهلها في يوم السبت على حرمات الله، حيث أمرهم أن يعظموا يوم السبت ولا يصيدوا فيه سمكًا، فابتلاهم الله وامتحنهم؛ فكانت حيتانهم تأتيهم يوم السبت كثيرة طافية على وجه البحر، وإذا ذهب يوم السبت تذهب الحيتان في البحر، ولا يرون منها شيئًا، فكانوا يحتالون على حبسها في يوم السبت في حفائر، ويصطادونها بعده. وكما وصفنا لكم من الاختبار والابتلاء، لإظهار السمك على ظهر الماء في اليوم المحرم عليهم صيده فيه، وإخفائه عليهم في اليوم المحلل لهم فيه صيده، كذلك نختبرهم بسبب فسقهم عن طاعة الله وخروجهم عنها.

Onlara, deniz kıyısındaki kasabanın durumunu sor. Cumartesi yasaklarına tecavüz ediyorlardı. Cumartesileri balıklar sürüyle geliyor, başka günler gelmiyorlardı. Biz onları, yoldan çıkmaları sebebiyle böylece deniyorduk.

Bir de onlara, o deniz kıyısındaki şehrin başına gelenleri sor. O sırada onlar cumartesi yasağına riayet etmiyorlardı. Cumartesi günü balıklar akın akın geliyorlardı, yasak olmadığı gün gelmiyorlardı. Yoldan çıkıp sapıklık yaptıkları için biz de onları işte böyle sınıyorduk.

Onlara, deniz kıyısında bulunan şehir (halkının) durumunu sor! Hani balıklar o yöre halkının yasağa uymadığı cumartesi gelmeyip yasağa uydukları cumartesi günü akın akın (bolca) kıyıya geldiklerinde, haddi aşıp (avlanma) yasağını delmişlerdi. İşte yoldan çıkmalarından dolayı biz onları böyle imtihan ediyorduk.

Ask them concerning the town standing close by the sea. Behold! they transgressed in the matter of the Sabbath. For on the day of their Sabbath their fish did come to them, openly holding up their heads, but on the day they had no Sabbath, they came not: thus did We make a trial of them, for they were given to transgression.

[Prophet], ask them about the town by the sea; how its people broke the Sabbath when their fish surfaced for them only on that day, never on weekdays- We tested them in this way: because of their disobedience-

Ask them (O Muhammad) of the township that was by the sea, how they did break the Sabbath, how their big fish came unto them visibly upon their Sabbath day and on a day when they did not keep Sabbath came they not unto them. Thus did We try them for that they were evil-livers.

And ask them about the town that was by the sea - when they transgressed in [the matter of] the sabbath - when their fish came to them openly on their sabbath day, and the day they had no sabbath they did not come to them. Thus did We give them trial because they were defiantly disobedient.
