And olsun ki, Allah, size verdiği sözde durdu. Onun izniyle kafirleri kırıp biçiyordunuz, ama Allah size arzuladığınız zaferi gösterdikten sonra gevşeyip bu hususta çekiştiniz ve isyan ettiniz; sizden kimi dünyayı, kimi ahireti istiyordu; derken denemek için Allah sizi geri çevirip bozguna uğrattı. And olsun ki O, sizi bağışladı. Allah'ın inananlara nimeti boldur.

Siz Allah'ın izni ile düşmanlarınızı öldürürken, Allah, size olan vaadini yerine getirmiştir. Allah size sevdiğiniz (galibiyeti) gösterdikten sonra zaafa düştünüz. (Peygamber'in verdiği) emir hakkında tartışmaya kalkıştınız ve isyan ettiniz. Kiminiz dünyayı istiyordu, kiminiz ahireti istiyordu. Sonra Allah sizi, denemek için onlardan geri çevirdi ve sizi bağışladı. Allah müminlere karşı çok lütufkârdır.

Yemin olsun ki siz O’nun izni ile düşmanlarınızı öldürürken, Allah size olan sözünü yerine getirmiştir. Sonunda gevşeklik göstermiştiniz; (Allah) size sevdiğiniz (istediğiniz) şeyi gösterdikten sonra durum hakkında birbirinizle tartışmış ve isyan etmiştiniz. Dünyayı isteyeniniz de vardı; ahireti isteyeniniz de vardı. Sonra denemek için (Allah) sizi onlardan geri çevirmişti. Yemin olsun ki sizi bağışlamıştı. Allah müminlere çok lütufkârdır.

Allah did indeed fulfil His promise to you when ye with His permission Were about to annihilate your enemy,-until ye flinched and fell to disputing about the order, and disobeyed it after He brought you in sight (of the booty) which ye covet. Among you are some that hanker after this world and some that desire the Hereafter. Then did He divert you from your foes in order to test you but He forgave you: For Allah is full of grace to those who believe.

God fulfilled His promise to you: you were routing them, with His permission, but then you faltered, disputed the order, and disobeyed, once He had brought you within sight of your goal- some of you desire the gains of this world and others desire the world to come- and then He prevented you from [defeating] them as a punishment. Allah verily made good His promise unto you when ye routed them by His leave, until (the moment) when your courage failed you, and ye disagreed about the order and ye disobeyed, after He had shown you that for which ye long. And Allāh had certainly fulfilled His promise to you when you were killing them [i.e., the enemy] by His permission until [the time] when you lost courage and fell to disputing about the order [given by the Prophet (ﷺ)] and disobeyed after He had shown you that which you love. ولقد حقق الله لكم ما وعدكم به من نصر، حين كنتم تقتلون الكفار في غزوة "أُحد" بإذنه تعالى، حتى إذا جَبُنتم وضعفتم عن القتال واختلفتم: هل تبقون في مواقعكم أو تتركونها لجمع الغنانم مع مَن يجمعها؟ وعصيتم أمر رسولكم حين أمركم ألا تفارفوا أماكنكم بأي حال، حلَّت بكم الهزيمة من بعد ما أراكم ما تحبون من النصر، وتبيَّن أن منكم مَن يريد الغنائم، وأن منكم مَن يطلب الآخرة وثوابها، ثم صرف الله وجوهكم عن عدوكم؛ ليختبركم، وقد علم الله ندمكم وتوبتكم فعفا عنكم، والله ذو فضل عظيم على المؤمنين.
