ألم تعلم -أيها الرسول- قصة الأشراف والوجهاء من بني إسرائيل من بعد زمان موسى؛ حين طلبوا من نبيهم أن يولي عليهم ملكا، يجتمعون تحت قيادته، ويقاتلون أعداءهم في سبيل الله. قال لهم نبيهم: هل الأمر كما أتوقعه إنْ فُرِض عليكم القتال في سبيل الله أنكم لا تقاتلون؛ فإني أتوقع جبنكم وفراركم من القتال، قالوا مستنكرين توقع نبيهم: وأي مانع يمنعنا عن القتال في سبيل الله، وقد أَخْرَجَنَا عدوُّنا من ديارنا، وأبعدنا عن أولادنا بالقتل والأسر؟ فلما فرض الله عليهم القتال مع الملِك الذي عيَّنه لهم جَبُنوا وفرُّوا عن القتال، إلا قليلا منهم ثبتوا بفضل الله. والله عليم بالظالمين الناكثين عهودهم.

Musa'dan sonra İsrailoğullarının ileri gelenlerini görmedin mi? Peygamberlerinden birine, "Bize bir hükümdar gönder de Allah yolunda savaşalım" demişlerdi. "Ya savaş size farz kılındığında gitmeyecek olursanız?" demişti. "Memleketimizden ve çocuklarımızdan uzaklaştırıldığımıza göre niye Allah yolunda savaşmıyalım?" demişlerdi. Ama savaş onlara farz kılınınca, az bir kısmı müstesna yüz cevirdiler. Allah zalimleri bilir.

Baksana, İsrail oğullarının Musa'dan sonra ileri gelenlerine! Hani onlar, bir peygamberlerine: "Bize bir kumandan gönder de Allah yolunda savaşalım..." dediler. O da: "Size savaş farz kılınırsa, acaba yapmamazlık eder misiniz?" dedi. Onlar: "Bize ne oldu da yurtlarımızdan çıkarıldığımız ve çocuklarımızdan ayrıldığımız halde Allah yolunda savaşmayalım?" dediler. Bunun üzerine savaş kendilerine farz kılınınca da onlardan pek azı hariç, yüz çevirdiler. Ama Allah, o zalimleri bilir.

Musa’dan sonra, İsrailoğulları’nın yöneticilerini görmedin mi? Peygamberlerine, “Bize bir hükümdar gönder (görevlendir) ki (onun komutasında) Allah yolunda savaşalım.” demişlerdi. (O peygamber) “Ya size savaş yazılır (farz kılınır) da savaşmazsanız?” deyince, onlar da “Yurtlarımızdan çıkarılmış, çocuklarımızdan (uzaklaştırılmış olduğumuz) hâlde Allah yolunda neden savaşmayalım ki?” demişlerdi. Kendilerine savaş yazılınca (farz kılınınca), içlerinden azı hariç yüz çevirmişlerdi (kaçmışlardı). Allah zalimleri bilendir.

Hast thou not Turned thy vision to the Chiefs of the Children of Israel after (the time of) Moses? they said to a prophet (That was) among them: "Appoint for us a king, that we May fight in the cause of Allah." He said: "Is it not possible, if ye were commanded to fight, that that ye will not fight?" They said: "How could we refuse to fight in the cause of Allah, seeing that we were turned out of our homes and our families?" but when they were commanded to fight, they turned back, except a small band among them. But Allah Has full knowledge of those who do wrong.

[Prophet], consider the leaders of the Children of Israel who came after Moses, when they said to one of their prophets, ‘Set up a king for us and we shall fight in God’s cause.’ He said, ‘But could it be that you would not fight, if it were ordained for you?’ They said, ‘How could we not fight in God’s cause when we and our children have been driven out of our homeland?’ Yet when they were commanded to fight, all but a few of them turned away: God has full knowledge of those who do wrong.

Bethink thee of the leaders of the Children of Israel after Moses, how they said unto a prophet whom they had: Set up for us a king and we will fight in Allah's way. He said: Would ye then refrain from fighting if fighting were prescribed for you? They said: Why should we not fight in Allah's way when we have been driven from our dwellings with our children? Yet, when fighting was prescribed for them, they turned away, all save a few of them. Allah is aware of evil-doers.

Have you not considered the assembly of the Children of Israel after [the time of] Moses when they said to a prophet of theirs, "Send to us a king, and we will fight in the way of Allāh"? He said, "Would you perhaps refrain from fighting if battle was prescribed for you?" They said, "And why should we not fight in the cause of Allāh when we have been driven out from our homes and from our children?" But when battle was prescribed for them, they turned away, except for a few of them. And Allāh is Knowing of the wrongdoers.
